Magento not sending emails to gmail and hotmail

| 10 Comments | Magento

A couple of our clients had noticed a problem that just started popping up. It appeared that emails to the free accounts like gmail, aol, yahoo and hotmail were not getting to their customers inbox. It turned out those services were just dropping the emails all together and were not just going to spam folders.

A fix to this problem is actually very simple, or it at least it was for our two clients.

Navigate to System > Configuration > Advanced > System > Mail sending settings > Set return path > YES

That fixed our problem with system emails like registration, order notification and password recovery not getting to the customer.

  1. Have you cleared your cache? Magento is really stubborn when it comes to caching things. It’s best to remove all files from /var/cache and then test.

  2. Thanks for reply.. I changed

Configuration > Advanced > System > Mail sending settings > Set return path > YES

I just removed all files under var/cache then made a new order with hotmail account and no email came through..

    Am i doing anything wrong?

  3. Thanks, helped solved my problem. Sometimes it is far simpler than it first seems!

    1. It could be multiple issues. Is the server set to only deliver locally? have you tried other domains other than the one you listed? you may want to install an SMTP extension if it’s only delivering locally.
